What Causes Uneven Sanding & Edge Over-Sanding Problems

Metal Sanding Machine

Hi, I am Joanna.
In the hope of solving your daily processing problems based on our 20+-year accumulated experience, I would like to launch this series. If you are struggling with surface defects, understanding the primary uneven sanding causes is the first step to troubleshooting. Here are some of the top causes and actionable solutions you may need for your wide belt sander on-site.

1.The Deformation of the Contact Roller

Cause: The self gravity and wear during the long use leads to the non-straightness of the pressure roller, which in turn generates uneven pressure on the workpiece and causes irregular sanding on the workpiece.

Solution: Calibrate the straightness and dynamic balance to improve the situation. A replacement of the pressure roller may be required for the seriously worn roller.

2.Non-flatness of the Working Table

Cause: Because of the long wear, the middle of the working table recesses, which results in the uneven pressure on workpiece.

Solution: Relevel the working table to restore the flatness.

3.Failed Tension Roller

Cause: An underperformed tension roller will cause belt run-out, which may lead to uneven tension on the sanding belt.

Solution: Adjust the tension, calibrate the corrective system to align the tension.

4.Uneven pressure coming from pressure beam

Cause: The whole pressure beam is driven by lifting cylinders and synchronous screw rod automatically. When the reaction speed of lifting cylinders is different, or one side of the screw rod is looser, or the mechanical wear are different at both sides, there will be an uneven pressure occurs.

Solution: Calibrate both sides lifting cylinders to achieve same stroke length. Ensure the same tightness of the screw rods. Have regular inspection for the synchronous system.

5.Uneven wear of the conveyor belt

Cause: Heavy wear on some certain places on the conveyor belt causes the uneven pressure on the workpiece

Solution: Replace with a brand new seamless conveyor belt with the same thickness. Take regular calibration of the flatness of the conveyor belt.

6.Machine tilting

Cause: Unflat floor makes the machine tilt

Solution: Adjust the anchor bolts to ensure the stability of the machine.

7.Too deep sanding removal at a single pass

Cause: When you set too much sanding removal at a single pass, especially with a rapid conveyor speed, the workpiece is thrust into the machine, as it takes longer time for deeper sanding. The workpiece may be deformed, causing an uneven sanding on the surface.

Solution: Reduce the sanding removal at a single pass, instead, adopt several sanding courses with gradual increase in sanding removal.

Mechanical & Component Troubleshooting Quick-Guide

Target Component Standard / Low-end Sander Premium Industrial Sander (Armpre Standard)
Component 01
Contact Roller
Pressure Roller
Long-term self-gravity and natural wear cause non-straightness of the roller. This generates uneven pressure distribution across the workpiece, resulting in irregular surface sanding.
  • Calibrate straightness and dynamic balance.
  • Replace the contact roller if serious wear is detected.
Component 02
Working Table
Conveyor Bed Flatness
Continuous friction and localized wear cause the middle area of the working table to recess/hollow out, leading to insufficient or uneven pressure on passing workpieces.
  • Re-level and re-machine the working table to restore perfect flatness.
Component 03
Tension Roller
Belt Tracking System
An underperforming or malfunctioning tension roller causes dynamic belt run-out, resulting in unstable and uneven tension across the wide sanding belt.
  • Readjust the overall tension system.
  • Calibrate the automatic tracking/corrective system to ensure proper alignment.
Component 04
Pressure Beam
Lifting & Synchronous Rods
Inconsistent reaction speeds between left/right lifting cylinders, localized looseness in the synchronous screw rods, or asymmetrical mechanical wear lead to uneven downward pressure.
  • Calibrate both lifting cylinders to ensure identical stroke lengths.
  • Tighten and balance the screw rods on both sides.
  • Perform regular inspections on the synchronous drive system.
Component 05
Conveyor Belt
Feeding Mechanism
Heavy, localized wear on specific areas of the conveyor belt creates thickness variations, altering the pressure applied to the workpiece during feeding.
  • Replace with a premium, seamless conveyor belt of perfectly uniform thickness.
  • Schedule routine flatness calibrations for the conveyor system.

Hopefully, these analyses will be helpful in solving your problem in using wide belt sanding machines on-site. Any problems about dealing with material surfaces, just come to me.

See you next time.
